For my EDET 650 course during my fifth semester in the Learning Design and Technologies master’s program, I completed an internship in educational technology. I completed my internship with Ny2, an online organization that designs special education software, curriculum, and learning tools. The area I interned was in content development for the Unique Learning System (ULS), an online program within Ny2 that provides access to the general education curriculum for students with special needs. This internship was a remote position and my supervisor was Jessical Nackel, a content specialist for Ny2’s Unique Learning System. My role as an intern was to create lessons for a ULS high school level science unit to reflect updated standards for students on an Alternative Pathway to Diploma (ADP). Additionally, during this internship, I created a job aid and conducted a needs assessment. The following resources are projects I completed throughout my internship.
The first project I created was a Job Aid for teachers planning a monthly unit through the ULS platform. The job aid served as a visual aid to guide teachers through the steps for navigating ULS in order to access unit materials and resources for instruction. The following image displays the job aid I created.
The next project I completed was a Needs Assessment Report for the ULS high school science unit on an Alternative Pathway to Diploma (ADP), for which I was writing a lesson for. This lesson needed to be updated to include new activities that target new instructional objectives based on an updated standard. The goal of this needs assessment was to gather data from teachers who plan to teach this science unit to create a lesson that provides guidance and support for those teachers implementing the lesson activities in meeting their students’ individual needs. In the end, the results indicated that the lesson needed to be developed to keep instruction differentiated with visuals aids and supplemental resources, and features to activate background knowledge to connect to new learning, such as real-world applications and interactive elements. The following document is the needs assessment report.
The following document is the lesson plan I created for the high school unit based on an updated standard. The topic of this lesson was "Around the Solar System", which was part of a "Earth and Space Science" unit. The lesson plan includes activities I designed, such as a trading card activity and a guided reading activity. This lesson plan was structured and designed based on the results of the needs assessment.
Throughout the course of this internship, I evolved as an educator and instructional designer by setting goals, seeking feedback, taking on challenging projects, and consistently reflecting on the experience each week. It equipped me with the necessary skills for pursuing a career in designing online learning content. These skills included project management as I worked to achieve goals given time constraints. I further strengthened my instructional design skills as I was able to branch out and design instruction outside of what I normally do. Most of the instruction I have designed throughout the Learning Design and Technologies master's program was for elementary-aged special needs students. However, this internship gave me an opportunity to create a high school-level lesson, allowing me to extend my skills in designing instruction to different grade level content. Additionally, this experience strengthened my collaboration and communication skills as I worked closely with my mentor in sharing ideas, discussing progress, as well as seeking and receiving feedback to better my work.
